ART
& SOUL
The Art & Soul program is an after school art program
designed to serve under-privileged youth of the Lubbock community. Once a month, each
group of students gets a chance to come to the Museum of Texas Tech
University and experience art and culture. The children learn about a
particular style of art and a particular artist to that style, then create a project based on what they learned.
The various
artists studied in the program this past year included Michelangelo,
Salvador Dalí, Frida
Kahlo, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The many projects
completed by the Art & Soul children have included building a tile
mosaic, “upside-down” painting, pop art with pastel crayons, surrealism
paintings, and self-portraits.
The program
serves over 75 children per month from four different after-school programs
in Lubbock.
The ages range from 5 years to teenagers. The program began in
September of 2003 and is supported by grants from the Helen Jones
Foundation, Inc.. The funds from these grants
have made available for use by the program a new digital camera, a new
LCD projector, and much needed art supplies
